A Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM), also known as a Greek TIN, is required for many legal, financial and administrative transactions in Greece, including purchasing property, opening a bank account and establishing a company.
When applying for a Greek AFM as an individual, the current AADE procedure generally provides for the simultaneous issuance of the AFM and the Kleidarithmos (authentication key). The Kleidarithmos is used to activate access to myAADE, the online platform of the Greek tax authorities.
Documents Required to Obtain a Greek AFM
The documents required may vary depending on the applicant's circumstances. In general, the following documents may be required:
- Valid passport or identity card
- Proof of address, where applicable
- Greek tax representative details, if a tax representative is required
- Power of Attorney, if the application is submitted by an authorized representative
- Additional supporting documents, depending on the applicant's personal circumstances, such as a marriage certificate.
For documents issued outside Greece, official translation and/or certification may be required, depending on the document and the applicable procedure.
AFM and Kleidarithmos: The Application Process
1. Prepare the required documents
The necessary documents and personal information are collected and checked before submitting the application.
2. Submit the online application
The application for the issuance of an AFM and Kleidarithmos is submitted electronically through the AADE “AFM & Kleidarithmos” application on myAADE. The application may be submitted by the individual or, where permitted, by a tax representative or authorized third party.
3. Complete the identification procedure
The applicant completes the required identification process. Depending on the circumstances, this may be completed through myAADElive by video call or through an appointment at a Tax Office.
4. Receive the AFM and Kleidarithmos
Once the application and identification process have been completed, the applicant receives their Greek Tax Identification Number (AFM) and Kleidarithmos.
5. Activate myAADE access
The Kleidarithmos is used to complete registration and obtain access to the applicant's myAADE/TAXISnet online services.
What Is the Kleidarithmos?
The Kleidarithmos (Authentication Key) is a personal authentication code used to access the online services of the Greek tax authorities through myAADE. It enables individuals to manage various tax and administrative matters electronically.
Is Form D210 Required?
Form D210 is not normally required for the standard online procedure for a new individual AFM application. Under the current procedure, the application for AFM and Kleidarithmos is submitted electronically through the dedicated AADE application.
However, D210 may be required in specific circumstances, particularly for changes to personal or tax-register information, such as a change of personal details, marital status or tax representative. AADE also provides for D210 to be used in exceptional cases where the issuance of an AFM cannot be completed through the standard “AFM & Kleidarithmos” application.
