Based on the announcement of 04-05-2016 of the European Central Bank (ECB), it was decided to stop issuing banknotes with a face value of 500 euros, clarifying, however, that what is in circulation, have the value of legal tender and will continue to be accepted as instruments. payments.
According to the ECB, the decision was made based on concerns that the banknote could facilitate illegal activities. The issuance of 500 euro banknotes will be stopped from the end of 2018, when the new 100 and 200 banknotes of the Europa series will be put into circulation. The remaining banknotes from 5 to 200 euros, are maintained and will continue to be produced – issued normally.
The 500 euro banknote will always retain its value and can be exchanged with the national central banks of the Eurosystem for an unlimited period of time.
